TREE groups

About TREE groups

Therapeutic Relational and Emotional Education (TREE) groups give pupils the emotional and relational boost they need to more effectively manage in a mainstream school setting. Designed from the outset as therapeutic environment, TREE groups give SEND pupils a grounding in basic communication and emotional skills while having a fun, motivational experience. Pupils learn to articulate their strong feelings in an positive way.

Being outdoors in nature has shown to have a positive influence upon mental health. Many people experience significantly less anxiety and depression when exposed to natural environment.

Research has shown that the relationship between the leaders and pupils, if based upon empathy and reflection, facilitates a more grounded, expressive response from pupils. Using a conflict resolution model, rather than a punitive model, builds relationship skills and connection to others.

This program focuses on the relationships between peers and helping adults and how those relationships positively impact upon emotional regulation.

Pupils will develop their own TREE Passport of social and emotional skills that they can take back into their school setting, with the ultimate goal being pupil self-regulation.

How TREE groups work

Pupils come to our site in their SEND group for sessions for either a day visit or a termly block of sessions.

These sessions will focus on fun, engaging activities that get pupils working together in a safe manner. They will also introduce and develop the practice of pupils using the outdoors as a way to calm when activated. This can be through movement, mindfulness, art, writing or relating authentically to adults or peers.
